If you’re anything like me, you love Chocolate. As you may already know, dark chocolate has some great health benefits, such as
- Being Good for you Heart– helps lower your blood pressure, improves blood flow, and may help prevent blood clots and hardening of the arteries. (recommended to be eaten 2-3 times per week for these results)
- High in Antioxidants
- High in Vitamin and Minerals – high amounts ofPotassium, Copper, Magnesium, and Iron
- Helps to Control Blood Sugar – helps protect against type 2 diabetes, and has a low glycemic index, meaning it won’t cause huge spikes in blood sugar levels.
- Aids in Weight Loss – Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences (LIFE) at the University of Copenhagen – shows that dark chocolate is far more filling than milk chocolate, lessening our craving for sweet, salty and fatty foods. Therefore, you will be satisfied quicker, and helps so we don’t overindulge.
But did you know that dark chocolate can physically boost your mood as well? According to the science department at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Connecticut, it gives your brain the nutrients it needs to feel happy. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), the same chemical your brain creates when you get the butterflies in your tummy from falling in love. Your brain releases endorphins due to the PEA, which in turn, makes you feel happier. So the next time you are feeling a bit down, pop a dark chocolate piece in your mouth. It’s delicious, and totally worth it!
